This article at Smart Planet I found to be thoroughly depressing. While it suggests two alternative outcomes, my fear is that it’s the dystopian one that will come to pass. The prospect of another half million square miles of urban growth in less than twenty years gives the lie to all the political prating about getting a grip on environmental issues.
Researchers say that increasing urbanisation could mean a major blow to biodiversity and carbon emissions Just what the world needs!
The lead author of the study in question is quoted as saying: “The associated environmental and social challenges will be enormous, but so are the opportunities.” What I read is: “The associated environmental and social challenges will be insurmountable, but some people won’t care because they’ll make a lot of money along the way.”
